During the month, 74-year-old Tom Silver died. Well known for his involvement with Quadrant motorcycles Mr Silver briefly offered his own machine, the Silver, built along Quadrant lines. The winner of many reliability trials in the Pioneer years, Tom held at one time the Land’s End to John o’Groats record and in 1903 crossed the African veldt on a Quadrant. During the First World War he organised the Midlands Motor Cycling Corps to train despatch riders.
At the IoM TT, Irishman Stanley Woods (Velocette) took the Junior race from teammate Ted Mellors with the works Norton of Lincolnshire’s Freddie Frith third. The Norton team hit back in the Senior race with Harold Daniell winning from Woods’ Velo and Frith. German Ewald Kluge (DKW) – of whom wags claimed his screaming supercharged Deek (DKW) two-stroke could be heard in Liverpool – won the Lightweight race by over 11 minutes from the Excelsiors of Ginger Wood and Tyrell Smith.
