Autobyk to Brighton

Riders gathered at the historic Victory Inn, at Staplefield, a West Sussex village on one of the more rural parts of the route to Brighton.

Among the NACC members present was Stuart Metcalfe, a dedicated enthusiast who owns a number of cyclemotors but chose his Excelsior Autobyk for the 20 mile outing from
his Surrey home.

Stuart’s 1939 example was bought quite by chance. He had spotted it at an antique shop and secured it for £75. There are no gears (later Autobyks had two-speed transmissions) but he says the engine has a surprising amount of torque and provides one of the easiest rides among his collection of ‘tiddlers.’ It also returns a remarkable 160mpg!
