Basically there is little difference between the new 494 c.c. Model R.5 BMW and those machines used by the German Trophy team in last year’s. International Six Days Trial. The only real difference to be noticed is that in the place of the supercharged o.h.c. engine one with normal overhead-valve gear and hairpin valve springs is employed.

Compared with more recent models which ban emanated from the BMW factory, the new 500 c.c. twin represents a big departure from previous standards. For instance, the characteristic pressed-steel frame has been dropped in favour of a duplex tubular type, and many improvements have been effected both in appearance and design.

The transverse-twin engine has the kick-starter on the left side of the machine. The crank works outwards, that is, across the frame, which at first makes starting from the saddle a trifle difficult. Provided the twin carburetters had been flooded-an air control is deemed unnecessary-the engit1e would fire second or third kick from cold. With the ignition partly retarded and the throttle closed, a gentle dig on the kick-starter pedal would result in the engine starting up and, when once warm, settling dom1 to a steady tick-over. The idling was almost uncanny-so slow that each firing stroke could’ be counted.
