Having been offered a trial run of the 147cc Francis Barnett we seized the opportunity of a day’s work in Birmingham to try out the running capabilities of this somewhat unconventional miniature. At first sight a run of eighteen miles in each direction, with some ten miles of traffic work, may not appear to be a very severe test; yet it is sufficient to form an opinion of the paces of a modern ultra-lightweight machine in so far as the requirements of its prospective owners are likely to be concerned.

The run to Birmingham over good roads, uneventful except for a choked petrol filter which was cured in a moment, gave us an opportunity of getting well accustomed to the little vehicle, although so simple is the control that felt perfectly at home within a few minutes of the start. In spite of the machine’s small size and light weight, a fair-sized rider can sit in a natural and comfortable position, and the triangulated duplex frame is so rigid laterally that one has an extraordinary sense of security under any road conditions.
