British Masters Grass Track

While former National champions were prevailed upon to present trophies and souvenirs, some of the sidecar racers ventured on to the track. Gerry Wheeler, passengered by son Steve, and Alan Artus, with Matt Fumarola, made a few demonstration laps. Within a couple of corners the outfits had closed up, the pace increased and for a couple of minutes of nostalgic cut and thrust the track echoed to the crisp sound of a couple of highly tuned Triumph motors on full chat.

Following that was George Cross. In his nineties, George drove the Triton outfit he campaigned in the 1960s. Having got George on to the track, it took some persuasion for the organisers to get him off it!

Sidecar driver Steve Smith was a man with a foot in both camps – first reserve for the 2011 Final, he achieved his first Masters championship in 1983!
