Lovely period photograph, from June 1933, of motorcyclists and their machines lined on the Portway, Bristol. ‘… the fine concrete road and promenade running beside the river Avon in the deep Avon Gorge at Clifton, a suburb of Bristol.’
The Motor Cycle reported; “It would have been a more attractive venue, from a scenic point of view, at all events, than that used for the Bristol Motor Cycle Rally.”
The rally had been organised by the Bristol Evening World, in conjunction with local motorcycle traders, and attracted around 150 motorcycles for the various classes in the concours d’elegance. The event took place with ‘…towering grey and red tree-clad cliffs [rising] on each side, while more than 230ft above, the famous Clifton suspension bridge dizzily spanned the gorge.’
