Classic Camera - Horsman’s Garelli special, April 1964
By: Web Editor
Liverpool dealer Victor Horsman Ltd, (specifically the company’s Eric Cheers) took Italian concern Garelli’s humble 94cc two-stroke single and set about giving it some more oomph.
To that end, a 10.5:1 compression piston was installed, the ports polished and a larger main jet fitted in the carburettor. What resulted was a machine which was at least 10mph (15 if the weather was right…) faster than the standard 55mph attainable.
It was named the Oulton Special.
Victor Horsman himself was of course a man associated with speed. During the 1920s he was a ‘star’ at Brooklands, his most famous and noteworthy achievements coming aboard first Norton and then Triumph machines. Indeed, the popular two-valve overhead valve model Triumph which replaced the less successful four-valve Ricardo was a direct result of Horsman’s work (and his earlier experiences with Norton machines, according to some commentators…)
On the Garelli, Motor Cycle summed up by saying: “I like it, as Gerry and the Pacemakers might say about this Mersey tuned Italian.
“It is a nice little machine which has been given a sporting polish – without losing any of its charm.”
