Every year the Westland Classic Motorcycle Club, based in Yeovil, Somerset, raises thousands of pounds for local charities by organising road riding events for owners of vintage and classic machines...

Since they began almost 30 years ago, the annual Spirit of the Sixties Run held in May and the Coast to Coast Run held in June have become established fixtures in many motorcyclists diaries, attracting riders from as far away as Cornwall, Surrey and the Midlands.

As a consequence of this success, the club now holds an event every September, the Sunflower Run, in support of St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton.

At the last club meeting for this year, the Mayor of Yeovil, Coun Manny Roper, was invited to present cheques totalling over £6000 pounds to Headway Somerset, the Freewheelers emergency medical courier service and to St Margaret’s Hospice. In addition, a further £531, raised at a club night hosting six-time world champion motorcycle racer Jim Redman, was given to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

When told that the club has raised more than £150,000 for charity over the years, Coun Roper expressed his amazement. “It is an example to us all that such a small number of people, all dedicated motorcyclists, should put so much back into their local community. It is a privilege to be here and to play a small part in the work that you do.”
