Classic British Legends: Jeff Smith MBE

The greatest scrambles (or motocross as it became) rider Britain has ever produced? There’s no argument really – it has to be Jeffrey Vincent Smith, the Colne, Lancashire, born rider, synonymous with BSAs, who from 1953 until 1971 was right at the top of the trials and then scrambling trees. He won 17 major titles for BSA, including the 500cc world motocross crown in 1964 and 1965.

What’s often overlooked is the fact Smith was also a mighty fine trials rider, winning every major British trial and title too, in 1955 triumphing in the Scottish Six Days and the British Experts, while the previous year he’d won his second successive ACU Star, also known as the British Championship.
