Brooklands Great War 100

On September 25, 2016, Brooklands Museum held another of its events to mark the centenary of the location’s important contribution to the war effort.

By 1916, European events had long since disrupted Brooklands’ activities and much of the site was given over to military purposes. It was also a training location for the dispatch riders that proved so valuable.

In 2016, Great War 100 offered military, car and aeroplane displays and demonstrations as well as the motorcycle element. History is set to be repeated as Brooklands faces further disruption, but this is of a far more positive nature. The Second World War hangar, a listed building, is going to be dismantled, overhauled and re-erected on a new site, allowing access to far more of the old circuit’s start and finish straight. The many hangar artefacts are now on temporary display around the museum.

Motorcycle activities for this year’s event were in front of the old pit garages, where a slalom course recreated the Army’s tests of basic riding skills.
