Touring Tales - Sponsored by Footman James

There’s always a story to tell when one takes a classic on tour. We’d like you to share with us some of your touring recollections; it doesn’t matter if the story relates to years ago or last season, just so long as it features old motorbikes.
And to make it worth your while, the kind folks at Footman James have put up a year’s insurance for your classic, absolutely free. So, waste no time; get typing!
This is a competition being run solely on our website, though we may print in the magazine one or more of the stories, in due course. We’ve only the provision for one picture per story, as it stands, so choose carefully!
How to enter / submit your tale:
• We are looking for a maximum of 500 words and one photo to describe your touring tale. Remember to give useful facts in the tale, if you want to let others try what you did!
• The best adventure/worst nightmare will be selected by the editor and offered a prize of one year's free insurance to the value of £250 (subject to terms and conditions) courtesy of Footman James
• The closing date for the first round is 10th June 2011. A second round will begin shortly after and another prize offered.
• Our standard terms of conditions for competitions can be read HERE *. The only exception to the normal terms is that we welcome additional entries - if you have many tales to tell!
• As tales are submitted, we'll pop them online here for you to read and rate!

Footman James’ top tips for safe and happy touring:
• You must carry copies - preferably more than one - of your MoT, vehicle registration and insurance documents (inc. all emergency numbers), for you and the bike. If you have an old paper licence, you may also need to update to a photocard driving licence - with paper counterpart - or International Travel Permit.
• Tell your insurer when you're going abroad, and find out what to do and what number to call in the event of an accident or breakdown.
• Have your motorcycle serviced before you go to ensure a safe trip.
• Familiarise yourself with the driving laws of the country you are visiting - including local speed limits and which side of the road they drive on!
• Drive defensively and expect the unexpected - the local driving style may be different to that of the UK
• If you are fined for speeding while abroad, always ask for an official receipt - even if you dispute the fine, it may still need to be paid or surety offered.
• Take a mobile phone with you on all journeys (remember to keep it charged!)
